Creating Psychological Safety for People with LGBTQIA+ Identities
NOTE this event has been changed from a Continuing the Conversation, 90-minute seminar to a 1-hour Brown Bag Discussion. It will still be a safe, facilitated time to share and learn about this topic. We’re looking forward to sharing this space with you!!
Continuing the Conversation is a small-group discussion driven seminar where we explore timely topics in a structured format based on The Culture of Respect's experiential learning model.
This month, in honor of Pride, we will be focusing on ways that we can make sure we are providing psychological safety in all spaces for those of us with LGBTQIA+ identities.
What is Psychological Safety?
Psychological safety is an environment that encourages individuals and makes them feel safe when taking interpersonal risks. It's knowing that it's okay to show up as your authentic self, and knowing that it is ok to make a mistake.
Without psychological safety, people are worried that what they say may be taken the wrong way, or that who they are may be held against them.
Why is this important?
We have the desire to make sure that everyone, people of all identities, feel safe and valued in our presence.
Unlike many of the identities we explore in The Culture of Respect, queer identities may be "invisible." Which can make it especially difficult to ensure that we are always holding space with compassion and fidelity.
What will we do?
The event will be a series of expertly facilitated small-group discussions, a whole group activity, and a "Share Out." The purpose is to learn from the identities and experiences present in the room. In The Culture of Respect, we believe there is no tool more powerful to effect positive change than the gifts of our personal stories.
The Culture of Respect is based on a model first developed at Cornell University over 25 years ago. We are skilled in creating safe spaces that foster compassionate sharing and vulnerability. Our facilitation gets us to the heart of the matter where we are able to create meaningful change within ourselves that we are able to carry out to the world.
Who should attend?
Everyone! Whether you are familiar with this topic, or it's the first time you've come across these terms. Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or not. This space will offer community, connection, catharsis, and everyone will walk away with something meaningful.
